Vallescondido, a jungle
lodge in Chiapas, Mexico.
We've found an archaeological adventure
to recommend to our site visitors.
For the archaeology aficionado with an abiding interest in Classical
Maya sites, we highly recommend staying at Vallescondido, a jungle
lodge in Chiapas, Mexico.
Vallescondido is located about half way between Bonampak and Yaxchilan
about 60 km (c. 36 mis) to the southeast and Palenque, about 60
km to the northwest. It is also convenient for visiting
Tonina and Pomona. All are highly significant Classical
Maya sites.
Even better, Willi Fonseca, the owner-operator of Vallescondido,
will organize excursions across the Usumacinta R. into Guatemala
to visit Piedras Negras, another significant, and nearly inaccessible,
classical site. Willi is an excellent guide who knows Piedras
Negras as well as anyone.
At the highest point at Piedras Negras you can see the plaque
marking the interment of the ashes of Tatiana Proskouriakoff (1909-1985),
one of the archaeologists who had worked on classical sites in
the 1930s and 1940s; her graphic reconstructions of Piedras
Negras were crucial to the understanding of the site and she was
instrumental in the deciphering of Maya hieroglyphs.
Willi can also guide excursions to lesser known sites in the area,
such as Sac Xic and others.
Vallescondido is a beautifully appointed lodge in a secluded setting
in the Chiapas countryside. And Willi's staff prepare excellent
regional cuisine for their guests.
Lovely accommodations, great food and the Maya sites you thought
you'd never get to see; altogether, Vallescondido is a great
adventure!
